Fall Feels & Kyle's Decadent Chocolate Birthday Cake
Hello There!
Summertime is ending, and I can already feel the signs of fall creeping in—and I absolutely love it. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. As I write this blog post, I have a “Small Batch Apple Cider” candle burning beside me, my Autumn Jazz playing softly in the background, and a hot cup of Pumpkin Spice coffee warming my hands. Do you really need to ask me why I love fall?
I hope you all had a wonderful summer and are as excited for fall as I am. There’s just something magical about the changing leaves, the crisp weather, pumpkin spice everything, hayrides, and fall festivals. I love it all.
This time of year always brings back those warm memories of family traditions, especially when it comes to birthdays. In our family, the birthday person gets to pick their favorite meal and dessert, whether it’s cake, pie, cookies, or whatever their heart desires. This tradition was started by my mother many, many years ago. She always made us feel so special on our birthdays, and I’ve tried to continue that with my own family.
Kyle’s birthday is on August 16th, and he has always loved the classic comfort food combo of fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, biscuits, and creamed corn. So that was exactly what he got! For dessert, his choice was my decadent chocolate cake that he absolutely LOVES. This year, as I baked his cake, memories of my mother flooded back. It’s a little bittersweet, as she passed away on August 22nd, 2022, just five days after Kyle’s birthday. I always think of that last birthday dinner we had together with her—it was an evening filled with love, and it’s a memory I hold close to my heart.
But this year’s celebration was still special in its own way. It was just the two of us. We had a quiet and cozy night. Kyle enjoyed one of his favorite meals, and he's been savoring his chocolate cake for about four days now!! Birthdays are a time to make loved ones feel special, and it’s a joy to continue that tradition, even as we remember those who are no longer with us. It is kind of a way of keeping their memory alive and with us!
Lord Bless You, Michelle
